One of the joys in doing my show is coming across organizations whose prime mission is doing something selfless and for the greater good of society. Social Good In Action (Houston, TX), headed by Martesha Haynes (right), is one such organization. I sat down with her Fall 2011 to get a better idea of how her idea came about and what type of impact she and her organization have had on a special population. ~ Kitty Y. Williams

Kitty: How did u first get started and what is Social Good In Action?

Martesha:  Social Good In Action (SGIA) is an organization that hosts fashion shows and concerts to raise money for children with Autism and other disorders.

Kitty: What is your main reason for working in this field?

Martesha: I started working for H.I.S.D. in 1999. In 2007 I was promoted to the Special Education Department of Gregory Lincoln Education Center. I spent time with and grew to love children with Autism.

Kitty: What type of challenges do most parents with these children face?

Martesha: Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). Children act out as part of the disorder. I work with them to make sure they get knowledge to go out into the world and live a normal life.

Kitty: So it is possible then…for children to live a normal life with Autism? They just need help focusing?

Martesha: They do and it’s possible. One of my students was non-verbal and it was thought he’d never talk again. I worked with him everyday and one day he began talking. His mother was very proud.
