Getting to Know Lee Hawkins

The INDIEgator: Where do you see your musical career in 10 or even 5 years from now?

Lee: I think my music career will have evolved in 5 to 10 years. I think I will have written a more diverse range of songs from different genres.

The INDIEgator: Would you like to share any words of Wisdom or Inspiration for other aspiring Musicians?

Lee: My words of inspiration are just to keep writing and get educated. I get approached by a lot of young people who want me to help them make connections in the music industry. The first question I ask them is “How are your grades?” because I know that people who do not go out and get some kind of education before jumping into the music industry are really at a disadvantage. Now that the industry is requiring people to have a significant amount of Internet and regional success before they get deals, it’s so important that people know how to strategize and manage their careers. You can’t just expect some Manager to come along and do this for you. What incentive does someone really have to help someone that hasn’t demonstrated that they can help themselves? And even if they do want to work with you, can you trust them if you don’t have any idea about what’s going on and are unable to think for yourself? You can’t protect your interests if you don’t have knowledge. That means go to school, read everything you can about the industry, know who the players are, manage your social media approach, and never give up!

The INDIEgator: Any upcoming Events, Shows or Album releases?

Lee: Right now I am asking everyone to download Midnight Conversations from iTunes. I think we put together a great album, and if you are into love songs, this is one you will not want to miss.

The INDIEgator: Any Shout Outs Lee?

Lee: I want to give a shout out to my Producer, George Nash Jr., and Gerald Williamson, who has advised us both and believed in this project from the very beginning. I also want to shout out Chris Rizik from Soultracks.com, and George Littlejohn, who has been a great friend and offered a lot of encouragement. He’s got the top indie label in R&B right now, including Eric Roberson, and I feel blessed to have gotten some guidance from him. I also want to say thank you to everyone who has supported my music over the years.

Also, I keep an e-mail list and send a lot of my musical announcements to these people. If you want to be included on this list, hit me up on Twitter with your e-mail address @LeeHawkins
