Milwaukee Christian Poet Monica Matthews

The INDIEgator: Since you do a lot of writing, do you plan to write any books or scripts in the future?

Monica: Yes, I actually have a few ideas and just had to finally choose one to start working on first. I don’t think I have mentioned this, but I also have a ministry called Savvy Living Lifestyles which I created in the summer of 2010 to promote wellness and healthy living among African-American women and children. I am currently writing a self-help workbook that will be used during upcoming workshops on positive image and self esteem that I will be hosting as part of this ministry.

The INDIEgator: Do you have any other shows coming up this year that you would like to share with us?

Monica: Right now my album release event has the majority of my focus, but I am still performing and booking different events as well. All of my performance where-a-bouts are listed on my web site under “events.”

“…No matter what, God’s love is unlike anything you can ever imagine…”

The INDIEgator: As a Spoken Word artist, do you ever collaborate with other Artists like Singers or Rappers do? Or is it more an individual thing?

Monica: I have collaborated with a couple of Singers who are also on my project; I’m looking forward to working with other Artists with Christian Poetics as well. I foresee my ministry being a little bit of both, which is also what I would encourage of the other members of Christian Poetics: Be apart of the group while also maintaining their individual artistry as well.

The INDIEgator: Do you feel the Poets in Houston support each other?

Monica: Definitely.Houston has some die hard poets who take this art form very seriously. There is crazy talent in this city, and I always see a lot of love passed between poets. As I mentioned before, I am apart of Write Club Houston, a writing group, and there is so much love and encouragement that goes on among us as we critique each other’s work, share different resources and event updates, and celebrate each other’s writing accomplishments. The Poetry community here truly is like a family.

The INDIEgator: What do you foresee as the future of Spoken Word in the entertainment industry?

Monica: Over the past several years Spoken Word has gained more recognition and respect in the industry. There are more television programs that feature Spoken Word artists now, and more people are seeing just how powerful and influential this art form really is. I think it will definitely continue to grow in popularity in its own right.
