Almost like yesterday, I remember 6 years ago I was doing Videography and dating a Photographer at the time who had arranged a meeting with a local airbrush Artist for a backdrop he needed. We were preparing to shoot an out of town concert in Louisiana that featured Indie Musicians as well. The 3 of us met up at a Starbucks on the corner of Fountainview and Westheimer Rd in Houston to go over the details for the backdrop. That was my first time ever setting foot in a Starbucks; it was a cozy little spot. The Airbrush Artist, DeAngelo Ellis, a handsome, creative and enthusiastic young man who loved the Arts and strongly believed in his abilities, impressed me. After the meeting we all went to his car and marveled at the amazing portfolio as he shared with us big plans for his creative future.

I remember being captivated by his faith and certainty in his coming success; motivated people most certainly motivate me too. As life goes, you meet people, folks get busy, people lose touch… But DeAngelo would call and check in with me from time to time to see what I had going on with my shows or company as well as to chit chat about what was going on in his Airbrushed world. We recently agreed that The INDIEgator would be the perfect medium through which to have another great conversation and see what all Mr. Ellis is into now, from being trapped behind a Security Desk with big dreams to becoming a very successful Entrepreneur and Airbrush King!

Kitty: Where are you from?

DeAngelo Ellis: I was born and raised in Houston, Texas.

Kitty: How did you learn to Airbrush?

DeAngelo Ellis: I am a self taught Artist. I never watched instructional videos. I just went straight off of instincts and experimented until I saw progress that pleased me.

Kitty: What turned you on about this skill versus other artistic outlets?

DeAngelo Ellis: I liked airbrush because it allows a person to see what you can do outside of drawing on a piece of paper. I love airbrushing clothing because I like to see people’s reactions when they get their clothing back from being airbrushed.

Kitty: What was your very first piece and how did you feel about it?

DeAngelo Ellis: My 1st piece was an airbrushed shirt and it was of Garfield. I felt like I did a good job on it but knew with the level I was on, I needed to keep improving to reach to the King level!
