Soul Vocalist Conya Doss on the Power of VII (Seven)

VII (Seven)

Conya Doss: be able to go back and work with him. This song is unique because the music is stripped down and it’s definitely more vocally centered, which I have not done a lot. Usually in my mind it was always production heavy.

The INDIEgator: Was there an organic reason why you got Frank into this project or did you intentionally want him to be the only one to do duets with you?

Conya Doss: It really was intentional because I couldn’t hear anybody else on this track besides Frank; to me it wouldn’t be the same. And just to go back to what I was saying before, in the beginning my very first group was with Frank. He started back with a group I was in called Enchanté and it is kind of weird how it all came around full circle.

The INDIEgator: What are your top two favorite tracks from this release and what makes them special?

Conya Doss: I love “You Got Me”; I think the whole record speaks for itself. It’s a very serene vibe and the beautiful lyrics talk about what I like to talk about, unconditional love. The other song is “Fragments”. I like the syncopated off deep vibes and the lyrical content which talks about the ups and downs in any kind of relationship. Sometimes things are not complete, it is in fragments and you have to try figuring out what you all need to do to put the pieces back together… if it’s necessary and if both parties are willing to do so. It’s really difficult. Of course I sung my Doo-Wap with Frank McComb, but I have so many songs on there that I really love.

The INDIEgator: Conya, What is your main message to the world through this project?

Conya Doss: The message to the world is that being creative leads to longevity in the music business period.

It doesn’t mean you have to win 1,000 awards, it just means being able to reach as many people as you can and have them appreciate what you do.

The INDIEgator: You also have a performance coming up on Memorial Day in Atlanta, Georgia with other well known Musicians including Chrisette Michele, Lyfe Jennings, Dwele and more. How are you preparing for that?

Conya Doss: I am practicing, I’m amped and can’t wait! I haven’t really performed there since my last release event. It’s going to be wonderful and will be my first time being able to share the new music in Atlanta. Here I am releasing a new project so I’m excited, doing rehearsals and getting in that mode.

The INDIEgator: Have you previously shared the stage before with all of these Artists that are going to be there or is this your first time with any of them?

Conya Doss: I’ve actually performed with quite a few of them. I have done several shows with Eric Roberson, Algebra Blessett, Lyfe Jennings, and Dwele. A few years ago I did a show with Anthony David, I’ve done a few with him. I know I’m missing some other people but I’ve definitely shared the stage with many of them.

The INDIEgator: We know the fans are excited!

Conya Doss: I’m excited too because I’m a fan of theirs as well!

The INDIEgator: In addition to your new album and upcoming concert, are there any significant experiences since 2012 that you would like to share?

Conya Doss: Just constantly molding myself with regards to being the best parent I can be. Last time I spoke with you I was teaching middle school students and now I have transitioned into teaching high school students.

The INDIEgator: And how has that transition been with the students?

Conya Doss: It has been quite an experience. The first year I didn’t think I was going to like it and it took a little adjusting to but now I love it. I love the kids, the staff, the administration… It’s just wonderful to be able to work with a team; I feel like I didn’t miss a beat even though I spent a lot of time at the other location. I feel like the transition went nice and smooth and I’ve been very blessed.

The INDIEgator: What else do you have planned for 2015, musically speaking?

Conya Doss: I’ll continue to create music and push this record whether I can reach one more person or 1,000 people. That would be wonderful, a job well done just to get my message through music out to the listeners.

The INDIEgator: Anything else you would like The INDIEgator readers to know about Conya Doss?

Conya Doss: She is on the grind, she’s just excited to release a new project, excited to be a Mother and watch her son grow.

The INDIEgator: Any shout outs?

Conya Doss: Shouts outs to my whole team: Lisa Gee, Miles Jordan and Myron Ruffin. Much love to my awesome Production team Rodney Jones, Jayshawn Champion, Myron Davis and the guest Artists that were on my project including Lin Rountree.

The INDIEgator: Thank you for this update Interview. We truly appreciate your time and look forward to seeing how the world responds to VII (Seven). Good luck on your big show Queen!

Conya Doss: Thank you, I appreciate you guys!
